Understanding UTM Parameters & Campaign Tracking

UTM (Urchin Tracking Module) parameters are small snippets of text code that you append to the end of a URL. When a visitor clicks a tracking URL with UTM parameters, Google Analytics (or other web analytics tools) parses these tags and attributes the traffic to specific campaigns, traffic channels, or media. This allows marketing teams to analyze the performance of individual marketing links.

The Five Standard UTM Campaign Parameters

Our online UTM builder supports all five industry-standard campaign parameters:

  • utm_source (Required): Identifies the platform or advertiser sending traffic (e.g. google, newsletter, facebook).
  • utm_medium (Required): Identifies the billing model or marketing medium (e.g. cpc, email, social).
  • utm_campaign (Required): Identifies the specific advertising or promo campaign (e.g. summer_sale, product_launch).
  • utm_term (Optional): Used in search ads to track specific search keywords (e.g. running_shoes).
  • utm_content (Optional): Used to differentiate similar ads or links within the same campaign (e.g. sidebar_banner, text_link_cta).

UTM Naming Convention Best Practices

To ensure your analytics data remains clean and easy to group, establish strict naming conventions for your tracking links:

  • Case Sensitivity: Google Analytics treats cpc, CPC, and Cpc as separate mediums. Always use **lowercase** letters for all parameters.
  • Avoid Spaces: Do not use spaces. Replace spaces with hyphens (-) or underscores (_) (e.g., newsletter-summer-2026).
  • Keep it Clean: Avoid punctuation and special characters inside campaign parameters to prevent parsing errors.
